Falling

The leaves are beginning to drift ever so slowly downward from our red maple tree in the front yard.  The crispness in the air this morning is like a calling card for some future winter.

With all of the rain that we have gotten this summer, I am hoping for a spectacular show of leaves this year, bursting into flames along the hillsides in great swaths of red, yellow and orange.  You can see the faintest hint of color here and there, as a sugar maple tree begins a jump a wee bit early in a rush to don some fall splendor before the rest of the grove.

But for the most part, the trees are holding steady.

It usually happens all at once here, some subtle shift in the light and you awaken one morning to a giant, leafy billboard for Fall.

I, for one, cannot wait.  This is my favorite season of the year.

And this year, of all years, I am going to savor every glorious moment of this season of spiced cider and spicier hillside vistas.  Life is too short to do otherwise on the best of days, but this summer of cancer treatment has taught me that you cannot, must not, wait only for the best of days...seize the every single day of your life and live it to its fullest, savor it wherever and whenever you can.

Laugh.  Love.  Live.

Welcome to the rest of my life.  As soon as I can finish these last two days of radiation, anyway...

The season shifted here so quickly, from one day to the next. Thursday was a high 86 degrees, and Saturday was only 56. We had rain too. So surprising for this time of the year in California. Now, when the winds blow pine needles and leaves fill the air. It's beautiful and a sweet reminder of what will come.

Enjoy every minute of it.
