Beyond The Levees

Yes, yes.  I know that by posting this picture that I am violating the national Katrina fatigue prime directive.

But there you are.

Five years after the fact, and people are still trying to rebuild lives, still fighting for the last bits of money owed by FEMA promises and insurance company intransigence.

That smudge line on the picture?

It's a high water mark from Katrina's flooding, although it might as well be a BP oil spill smudge this year since it amounts to the same damned thing for folks on the margins.

New Orleans is beautiful, the people are amazing, and the food is out of this world.  To see a city this vibrant culturally and spiritually get beaten down all over again?  I won't lie.  It's rough.

But I'd bet that they'll rebuild all over again, just like they always do. (YouTube)

Thank the lord.

The good news for me?  Dinner at Arnaud's this evening in the Jazz Bistro, with their sublime shrimp remoulade and a jazz trio that plays some wonderful old standards while we dine.
